PREAMBLE
We believe that there is a groundswell of support for a world view, based
on a new global ethic of human rights for all, care for the fragile planet
on which we live, and the interdependence of all living things and
resources. Many U.S. citizens today feel anxious and insecure.
Despite U.S. military might and economic power, we are vulnerable to
terrorist attack and its economic effects. Though we love our
country, we are uneasy about the assumption that we can solve the problem
by waging a war. Deep down, we know that a military campaign might
result in the capture of some terrorists or the removal of a particular
dictator, but we also know it will not address the root causes of
terrorism nor will it assure a climate in which democracy can thrive.
We know that our earth is a
fragile ecosystem. Due to scientific advances, including
electronic communication which knows no boundaries, the world is no longer
a collection of sovereign nations, but a single homeland, and each member
of the human family is a citizen of that homeland. This recognition
transcends partisan ideologies. No nation’s people can be secure
when so many people around the world are denied a decent standard of
living or deprived of basic rights. No peace can be achieved unless the
society of nations begins to function more as a real community, with each
nation abiding by a commonly accepted code of international law.
While this platform makes some specific proposals, it is an appeal to
leaders of the United States to regard the well being and security of
"homeland Earth" and all its inhabitants as their highest
priority objective. This is a fundamental moral reorientation, since it
implies that our true national interest is best served by safeguarding the
interests of the entire human race. We call on our leaders to adopt
this world view and make an unequivocal commitment to the
fulfillment of the goals of the United Nations Charter: to save succeeding
generations from the scourge of war, reaffirm human rights, and establish
respect for international law.
